Why do the creepy little things disappear when you want to get rid of them?

Does body spray actually get rid of them or just make them smell better??? The worst I had was staying at my parents' place, I woke up about 5am and heard a really loud, spooky rustling noise. I put on my specs and looked across and there in my writing bag was the biggest spider I have ever seen, and he was pretty mean looking too. I thought I can't wake my poor dad up now to get rid of this thing, so I've got to get rid of it myself. It took me about 20 minutes to work up the courage to pick up the bag on a coathanger, leg it down stairs faster than I have ever moved before, and tip the bag out. I came back to collect my stuff about 3 hours later!

I hate the spiders with the longest legs, they can chase you faster
