The smell of fear
Please spare a thought for our savvy soapstars. It doesn’t have to be a long or particularly profound thought. But a thought nevertheless.
You see, what they’re about to undertake is probably one of the most nerve-wracking journeys of their lives. For some, that journey will be short. For others, it will last for ten-days and lead to significant personal – and maybe even professional – development.
And they’re all “bricking it.”
Yes, that was the conclusion of Nicholas Bailey – a man who once performed in front of 20,000 clamouring fans. “Until the end of the first number, I won’t know whether I can do it or not,” Nick acknowledged. “But that kind of turns me on.”
Not everyone was similarly ‘turned on’ at the prospect of hitting bum notes live television.
“It’s dead scary,” Roxanne Pagett admitted. “It’s hitting home now that it’s real.
“Although we’re actors we’re not hiding behind a part now. We’re not hiding behind our roles and our characters.”
And that’s just it.
For the next ten nights we’ll get to see these soapstars do what many of our popstars point-blankly refuse to do: sing live in front of millions of people. And unsurprisingly, even the old-hats are getting a little nervous.
“That’s the thing,” Wendi Peters pondered. “All ten of us can sing and hold a tune.
“But singing live in front of millions with a live band – that’s what’s scary.”

It's judgement day!
The competition has yet to get underway and already the judges are getting a little hot under the collar.
But while we’re pretty sure that none of this professional panel will mysteriously go AWOL or, for that matter, get over-excitable with their light refreshments, they are promising to be a little on the feisty side.
“You have to be honest,” Cilla said on the eve of Friday’s show. “You really do have to be honest. But that doesn’t mean to say that you have to be nasty.”
Not all the judges agreed. In fact, television producer Chris Cowey seemed to be aching to get his teeth into some of our soapstars.
“I’ve never known so many actors be so nice to me in such a short space of time,” Chris confessed. “It’s just a shame that I’m not going to reciprocate - we’ve got to keep the standards up.”
And Chris isn’t the only one yet to be taken in by our performers pleasantries. American Billy Sammeth has never even seen a British soap, and is keen to offer his honest, uncluttered analysis of our soapstars’ singing.
“I’ll be the bad guy,” mused Billy as he contemplated the ten days ahead. “I don’t know any of them so I can only tell from the two minutes that they sing.”
One thing is for sure, neither of the boys want to be given the Simon Cowell tag.
“Neither Billy nor I are planning to be the new Simon Cowell because panto season is over and we don’t need another panto bully.
“And anyway, I wear jeans more than high-waisted, rib-crusher trousers.”

Sing for your soap
The talent shows come thick and fast nowadays as it seems the public just can’t get enough of them.
Paddy Power know what it takes to win one of these shows. They had Shayne as the favourite from week one of TheX Factor. And it seems they’ve got their favourite already for Soapstar Superstar!
He maybe the dressed-up goth of Weatherfield but Richard Fleeshman is a crooner in real life and can play a number of instruments, the cast of the Street have trouble shutting him up apparently. He’s the 6/4 fave and will be leading the way for the Corrie stars. Maybe he’ll stick to character and do a few Cure numbers?
Click here to bet on Soapstar Superstar!
Former Hollyoaks star ‘Bombhead’ wants to use this to launch his singing career, so the 3/1 offered for him to win may seem good value if you think he can actually sing.
But the real star could be Emmerdale’s Chastity, Lucy Pargeter. Before joining the soap Lucy toured with the likes of Boyzone and Westlife. So she certainly knows how to reach those high notes and looks a great 10/1 bet to win!
6/4 Richard Fleshman (Coronation St) 3/1 Lee Ottaway (Hollyoaks) 7/1 Andy Whyment (Coronation St) 7/1 Sammy Winward (Emmerdale) 10/1 Wendi Peters (Coronation St) 10/1 Lucy Pargeter (Emmerdale) 14/1 Roxanne Pallet (Emmerdale) 20/1 Shobna Gulati (Coronation St) 20/1 Nicholas Bailey (Eastenders) 22/1 Michael Grecco (Eastenders)

No soapstar slip-ups
We said you'd see your favourite soapstars in a whole new light after tonight. And we were right!
You couldn't help but be enraptured from the moment Lucy Pargeter got us off to a rip-roaring start with a Bonnie Tyler classic.
And by the time Richard Fleeshman finished it off with a stirring rendition of Daniel Bedingfield's 'I Can't Read You', we'd seen our soapstars in all their glory.
But they weren't without their critics.
Wendi Peters looked ready to quite-rightly bash Billy Sammeth after he suggested she covered up next time. And Chris was met by a barrage of boos from the swaying crowd with his nonsensical condemnation of Nick's 'Over My Shoulder'.
But for the most part, the judges were wholly complimentary. They gushed after Roxy - a little lady with an impressively large voice - had wrapped up a Lucy Silvas number, and they were wowed by Shobna's stirring performace of 'You're so Vain'.
Andy and Mike battled through a couple of nervy starts, and Lee Otway conquered a tricky opening number, Barry Manilow's 'Mandy'.
Unfortunately, the evening was destined to end in heartache for two of our contestants. While the rest can sleep easy (or easyish, after the songs you guys chose for them), Wendi and Sammy are left facing the public vote. One of them will be leaving at the start of tomorrow's show, the other will open the programme. But who? Only you guys can answer that!

I think Roxy and Richard are the best on there. Definitely think it will be between them two on the last night.
