Do you believe in ghosts?
There are spirits because Derek connects with them and I’ve definitely seen spiritual entities. Things have happened that shouldn’t have happened. I’ve been touched, pulled pushed and scratched…. I think the question is not ‘Do you believe in ghosts?’ but rather ‘What are ghosts – are they really the spirits of dead people or a collective energy we don’t understand yet?’
What do you make of seances?
Sometimes, when we’ve done them, our expectations have been higher than the results, but some have been brilliant. Brannigans was quite extraordinary. We all felt something. We heard things and it seemed that when we asked for something it happened.
What’s it like working with Derek?
Filming with Derek is in one respect very easy to do. He’s become an extremely good friend. He’s a joy to work with. On the other hand, it’s sometimes very difficult because he sees all the things that we do not and it can be very hard to see him go into a trance. If you see him in trouble you want to help him.
His gift is just extraordinary. We’ve met quite a few mediums doing this show, but not one of them are a patch on Derek. He can be so specific. It’s just amazing. All you sceptics out there, have a chat with Derek and I promise you wouldn’t be a sceptic after that.
What are the problems filming a show like Most Haunted? There are the usual problems you get with filming, but these are added to when night falls. In the daytime, we have a specific running order, but when it comes to the night time everyone is on edge because we don’t know what’s going to happen. You can’t write a script for the night time. Everyone is apprehensive and walking into a building you’re not familiar with in the pitch black is a scary thing. Plus we’re up for a whole 24 hours without sleep, the entire crew. They’re all extremely dedicated. They’ve amazed me.
What’s it like filming through the night?
I’ve never worked with a more dedicated group of people - this show can only be achieved by a dedicated crew - and the situations we find ourselves in are pretty tough. There are a lot of fears to face. Anyone in the crew can be pushed, pulled, touched, whispered to, told to get out of the place. A lot of it happens off camera - someone can go to the toilet and come back scared out of their wits because something’s happened, but obviously they haven’t taken a camera to the toilet. They can see things, they can have Derek telling them there’s someone behind them, there are cold spots – and this goes on all night. What you see is one hour – a representation of the 24 hours we spend on each location. My job is easy because I have the back up of this great team.
Which location has most frightened you?
The Red Lion, the first time I got scratched scared me. The most depressing place was Clerkenwell – and frightening because of what happened to Derek. It wasn’t a nice place. It was damp, nasty and dark, but it was also the first time I’d ever seen Derek get that upset about a particular spiritual presence. He was being very protective of us all. You could tell he was worried and when he’s worried, you know there’s a reason for it.
What shocked me more was Brannigans – the first time Derek changed to such an extent that he was completely unrecognisable. He didn’t like the crew being there. And when I went over to try and bring him out of it, even as someone who’s been in a fighting arena, I’ve never grabbed hold of someone and not been able to move them. He was like solid rock. And when he hit the floor, we couldn’t pick him up – three people couldn’t pick him up off the floor. And to see how much it took out of Derek in the end… that had everyone on edge.
