I intend not to offend.. this was simple little ficlet running around my head..
Summary: When the clock strikes 3 am, i'll find my way home.
She had gone. He had lost her. He had driven her away.
Karl sat aimlessly in his car, looking out of the window blindly, thinking over every damn mistake he’d ever made including letting her walk out of the door…to him!
Derek looked humble as he entered the room, smiling at his newfound lover but Yvette was far from happy when she finally noticed he was in the room. She let out a heavy sigh as she clasped her hands together, missing her rings and her husband.
“Hey sweetheart, what’s the matter?” Derek asked, his smile quickly fading as he sat beside her and she turned to him to distaste.
“Please don’t call me that.” She softly spoke. “Karl calls me that.”
He nodded and rubbed a hand over her back, something that Karl did a lot too.
“So Yvie, what’s the matter?” Derek asked again, pulling her close.
“Nothing.” She started but then she knew she had to face up to her demons. “It’s, well I just wish Karl and I hadn’t parted on bad terms.” She felt the tears brimming when she thought of Karl. Sometimes she wondered why she even left him in the first place; she still loved him more than anything in the world. He made her happy, he protected her and loved her enough to suit them both a lifetime and it was these thoughts that damaged her thinking and made her doubt her decision and reasons for leaving Karl to take up residence with Derek.
“Derek…” She started but when she looked him in the eye, she couldn’t continue, she had to lie. “I love you.”
She froze, hoping that he had bought her lie and he must have because he smiled and leaned forward to kiss her.
“I love you too darling.” He mumbled against her and her whole body shuddered. “You cold?”
She wasn’t sure how to say that his words revolted her so she just smiled and nodded. “Yeah it’s a bit chilly in here.”
He tightly wrapped his arms around her and pulled her against his body, her head on his shoulder. Yvette’s body didn’t fit rightly with Derek’s the way it did with Karl’s. With that thought, she began to cry.
Inside the house, Karl fiddled with the rings in his hand over and over again, turning them over and over in his palm, memories shooting through him, tears overflowing as they spilled onto his cheeks. He didn’t know what he had done wrong but he just wanted her back. He hadn’t cried this sincerely since the day she had agreed to be his wife but that night he couldn’t hold it in as he began to sob loudly, clutching the 3 rings to his chest. He rolled onto his side, lying on the sofa looking out on the world as he gave into anguish.
Yvette lay in bed that night, tears spilling down her cheeks as she felt Derek get in beside her, the darkness taking its hold on them as it dragged out every emotion.
When a small sob escaped her throat, she closed her eyes tightly, hoping Derek hadn’t heard but unfortunately for her, he had. He shifted around before sitting up and turning the bedside lamp on. Yvette didn’t do or say anything as he sighed heavily.
“Yvette, what’s wrong?” He asked, somewhat aware of the answer already. She hesitated before pulling herself into a sitting position and then she looked at him.
“It’s Karl.” She choked and a frown formed on his face.
“What about him?” Derek asked and she swallowed as if giving herself courage.
“I mean, I care about you but I don’t think I love you… I don’t think I ever can.” She took a hold of his hand, eyeing the time on the digital clock, 1:30 AM. Oh god, she groaned inwardly.
“Ok,” was all he said and she smiled through her tears.
“And Karl, well I just…I can’t not be with him.” She tried to explain and although he was bitter about it, he understood.
At 2:00 Am, she had all her things in her car and was just about to drive off when Derek placed a hand on her window, which she rolled down, allowing him to speak.
“It’s been good Yvie.” He smiled but Yvette couldn’t return the smile, she just nodded instead. Starting up the engine, the radio came on and the musical melodies drifted in and out of her head, making the 45-minute drive home peaceful.
Karl awoke with a start at 3 am, finding himself sprawled on the sofa, unaware he had even fallen asleep as the memories came pounding back into his head and with sickening realisation, he remembered it hadn’t all been a nightmare and that his wife really had left him. The pain in his chest returned shortly after too. Then he was reminded as to why he had woken up; there was a knocking at the door.
“Who the f*ck would be visiting at this time?” he hissed aloud to himself as he lazily got up off the sofa, the 3 rings still nestled in his hand as he stumbled to the door, still groggy with sleep. He opened the door unsure who to expect but was suddenly shocked out of drowsiness to see Yvette standing there looking like a lost little girl.
“I’m sorry.” She started and he moved from the doorway to allow her to enter. She felt the hostility almost immediately and she felt the tears welling up again as she felt the adjoining lump rising in her throat that almost made it painful to swallow. She swallowed hard to rid herself of it before watching his face but unlike other times when she’d be able to tell what he was thinking, she had no clue as to what she was feeling. “Karl-” She started but couldn’t continue as he frowned at her.
“It’s 3 am.” He said solemnly and she nodded, her own frown forming.
“Yes I know.” She slowly spoke, watching him as he sat on the sofa aimlessly staring at her rings in his palm. “Karl I made a mistake. I thought I could love him but I can’t because all my love is focused on you.”
She felt the lump rise once again but this time she couldn’t stop them from falling. “I’m Sorry Karl.” She began to cry.
She tried to keep her sobs out of her voice but failed miserably as Karl looked up, frowning when he saw her tears. He didn’t say anything; he just stood up slowly as he walked solemnly over to her. Yvette held her breath, silently hoping he had heard her words. He took her left hand gently, sliding on first her engagement ring, then the wedding ring and finally her eternity ring, onto like the separate days he gave them to her. She wasn’t sure what to say to break the silence before he placed both his hands either side of her face, leaning down to kiss her passionately as he did so. Yvette wrapped her arms tightly around him once they pulled apart, as he breathed a sigh of relief and he pressed his forehead against her neck and shoulder.
“Please don’t ever do that again, I don’t think I can go through losing you again.” He mumbled and she smiled into his hair.
