Under the cover of darkness, the daring Most Haunted investigators ventured into Stockport last Friday night to examine the most sinister mysteries of Staircase House.
This merchant’s house, in Stockport Market Place, was built over 500 years ago and the stories of apparitions and ghostly figures certainly caught the attention of Yvette Fielding, Derek Acorah and Karl Beattie, who chose this location for one of their Most Haunted LIVE shows on the Living TV channel.
Karl Beattie, Director/Producer of Most Haunted Live, said: “Staircase House is a hidden jewel in Stockport’s crown. It has a lot more to offer than architecture and history - it’s very scary and some of the guests are see-through!”
As the team of investigators were whisked from the studio in Manchester to Staircase House, we heard tales of visitors and staff who, over the years, have reported a multitude of petrifying paranormal phenomena including the ghostly figure of a butler lurking on the famous staircase.
Over the next three hours Staircase House was broadcast live to the nation and revealed some spine-chilling experiences. The house was particularly active, rife with tapping, rapping and knocking noises as the investigation team called for the spirits to communicate with them. Thumping sounds from the floor responded to Yvette asking questions of the spirits, and a ghostly spectre, half-lit, was seen moving around the staircase.
Spirit medium, Derek, uncovered a raft of family names, hearing the hauntings of Robert Wild, Robert Outen (former butler to the Shallcross family), Thomas Shallcross, and Rev. Henry, all of whom lived in or owned the house between the 17th and 19th centuries. The name Legh was also picked up by Derek as four members of the team held a ouija board and stirred an angry spirit to spell out the word DIE!
Shortly afterwards, while calling to the spirits, Derek was superimposed by the ghost of Thomas Shallcross, revealing the angry ranting of ghosts who were disturbed by the invasion of unwanted guests. Indeed, this event caused the whole crew to feel sick - even the camera man collapsed!
The cold store, parlour and staircase were the most spooky and active of all the rooms and as the nation sat on the edge of their seats, many members of the public reported seeing ghostly figures and shadows lurking in the house.
Yvette Fielding commented: “Staircase House is a beautiful property, we thoroughly enjoyed our time there and wish it could have been longer – even though it was haunted!”
Councillor Pam King, Executive Member for Leisure, added: “This is the first paranormal investigation that we have allowed. We have spent 10 years restoring Staircase House and finally opened the doors to the public at the end of August. During this time we have had reports from staff who have seen a ghostly figure, and undoubtedly this is a house with a lot of history. Most Haunted have certainly shown us that Staircase House has a lot more to offer than first meets the eye!”
