Did you know that;
The first Zoo in America was in Philadelphia,
Bats always turn left when exiting a cave,
A raisin dropped in a fresh glass of soda will bounce up and down continually from the bottom of the glass to the top.

September 26th, 1983 - Stanislav Petrov, a Soviet army officer gets what appears to be a warning that the US has just launched nuclear missiles at the USSR. A computer system would automatically retaliate, all it needed to know from Petrov was "is this a real strike, or is it a false alarm?"
It sounds like something from a science fiction plot, but it really happened. Luckily, the guy made the call that it was a false alarm and he single-handedly prevented WWIII.
His decision actually partially ruined him. He was seen as an officer who couldn't be trusted to follow orders and spent the rest of his career pushing paper. I think he deserves more recognition, especially considering he kept this a secret for 20 years...even after retiring from the military and spending his days living on a shitty state pension. He was given an award by the Association of World Citizens last year.

During WW2, the Japanese sent masses of hot air balloons loaded with altitude activated incendiary bombs across the Pacific to America. 9,000 of them. Only 1,000 made it and only one ever killed anybody...and that was because they found it lying on the ground and thought it'd be a good idea to go messing with it.
